Mark-zone Detection Now Available at All RaceSense Regattas
We’ve all spent time on the water wondering, or arguing, about if a boat is in the three boatlength circle. It’s easy to disagree with another team when you’re both making a guess at where an imaginary radius falls around a buoy, and how that relates to your position. RaceSense has now taken a huge step towards ending those arguments, and making mark roundings more fair and more fun.
Three Boatlength Circle Detection is now available at all RaceSense events. Any mark on a course can be outfitted with an Atlas device and added to a course in Vakaros Race Control. Then, when boats enter the three boatlength circle, a pink light will illuminate on the LED bar of their Atlas instrument. When a boat exits the circle, this LED shuts off.
For team races and other formats, the zone size can be configured to any number of boatlengths.
This indicator light isn’t just visible to sailors - it’s also apparent to on-water umpires, who will also be able to make better judgments now about where the circle actually is, and which boats have entered.
While this doesn’t yet solve the question of who’s overlapped with who, or indicating which boat has rights, the hope is that just by clearing up the many misconceptions about where the circle starts and ends, racing around the corners can become one step fairer.
